Research shows that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read will gain skills. It can be a challenge to keep kids reading all summer. Here are a few ideas to help you get started. Remember summer reading should be fun!
✓ Set aside a consistent time for reading each day.
✓ Read aloud together.
✓ Play word games
✓ Let kids choose what they want to read - Follow the 5 Finger Rule.
✓ Read on the road.
✓ Listen to a story.
✓ Be a reading role model.
Simply focusing on math language during daily routines can support greater math understanding for children; for example, counting and comparing numbers of food items in your lunch, or asking questions like "How many more plates do we need?" or "How can we divide these cookies evenly?" This encourages children to think mathematically and solve problems.
✓ Use math language during daily routines.
✓ Practice math facts while driving places.
✓ Play board/ card/ dice games that involve numbers.
✓ Estimate costs, compare prices, and calculate change while shopping.
✓ Have your child measure and count while cooking, practice doubling a recipe.
✓ Use calendars and clocks to discuss dates and elapsed time.
✓ Be a math role model.
Online Resources for Skill Practice
Students at AEMS use the following programs to practice basic reading and math skills:
AEMS's Recommendation: 20-30 minutes of daily reading practice, either with books or Lexia.
Website: https://www.lexiacore5.com/
Use your child's teacher's email or our Reading Specialist's email (ahattan@aemseagles.org) to get connected to our organization within the program.
Your child's username will be their lunch code #. (If you do not know this code, call or email anyone at the school for help or check Alma.)
Your child's password will be their first name, with the first letter capitalized.
AEMS's Recommendation: 20-30 minutes of daily math practice, either with games, flash cards or IXL.
Website: https://www.ixl.com/signin/andoverems
Your child's username will be their lunch code #. (If you do not know this code, call or email anyone at the school for help or check Alma.)
Your child's password will be their first and last name initials, lowercase, and then their lunch code #.
For example, Emily Bates' username is 30102, and her password is eb30102
Summer Reading Challenge Materials
This year, AEMS is partnering with the Andover Town Libraries to support students' summer reading. The attached flyer gives details about the libraries' summer reading programs and the 24-Hour Reading Challenge!
By reading just 20-30 minutes each day you can reach the goal of reading 24 hours this summer! For every 8 hours, you will be able to choose from the prize center when you visit one of the town libraries!
Listening to audiobooks or having family members read aloud also counts toward the challenge.
Families, thank you for being an active part in your student's learning and helping them continue to discover some of the greatest reading this summer!
